6 Tips For Getting The Most Out Of A PR Internship

Starting at a PR and marketing agency as a graduate intern can seem quite daunting. Not only are you being introduced to new tasks, but you are also greeting a sea of new faces.

I’ve been interning at Octopus Group for a month now, and with two previous internships at other companies under my belt, I have formed a list of my six top tips to make a good impression as an intern in public relations:

1. Be hands on

No matter how big or small your team is, there will always be someone who could use a hand. Helping out colleagues with different tasks will not only show how flexible you are, but will give you a chance to work on things that you might not have otherwise had the chance to do and widen your skillset. But don’t take on more than you can handle!

2. Make an effort

Showing enthusiasm to be included in team activities both in and out of the office will have a positive impact on your bosses and co-workers. If you’re looking to be hired full-time after your internship ends, show everyone you do really want to be there by socialising and making connections with colleagues throughout the whole company and not just your particular team.

3. Don’t be afraid to ask questions

Being curious or asking for help is not something to be frowned at. In fact, it is actually a good thing. If you are struggling with workload, it is far better to let your manager know you need a hand, rather than tackle it alone and not manage to finish your tasks.

4. Prioritise

Make sure you stay on top of deadlines and be prepared to have to focus on different tasks at short notice. It may seem obvious, but staying on top of emails and making sure that you have some sort of planner for your daily tasks is important. It’s also very satisfying to strike through tasks when you complete them.

5. Check it over

Always proofread emails before you send them, and if you are speaking to a client it is always a good idea to ask your supervisor or account manager for guidance so you can be confident that you are saying the right thing in the correct manner.

6. Speak up

It may seem a bit intimidating at first, but don’t be afraid to voice your opinion if you have an idea or solution to a problem. Companies and colleagues will welcome a fresh way of seeing things.
