A desire to impress…making the agency move to account executive

Impress my new colleagues and settle as quickly as possible – those were the two things I really wanted to achieve during my first week at Octopus Group. It was a big move for me – I was going from a small PR agency to a much larger PR and marketing agency – and I was more than a little nervous about it, but I’m happy to say that Octopus did as much as it could to make the transition a smooth one for me, I joined as an account executive and my role meant right from the start I was working with, and learning from, people from different departments each day, as well as working in the same office as the directors who founded the company, so getting a really good feel for the agency’s ethos. I was used to working with a team of fewer than 10 people that was structured completely differently. Octopus helped me adapt to working with more stakeholders by giving me clear feedback and encouraging me to share my ideas during meetings. It quickly made me feel comfortable and confident in the team structure – two qualities that are essential for delivering the best work for clients. It is not an easy job to bring in a new account executive and get them up to speed with a host of different clients, but the combination of meetings, client briefings, social interactions, along with the agency’s clear results targets, helped me get there much more quickly than I expected. For example, we have monthly group meetings where we highlight the fantastic work that has been achieved and look at the progression we’ve made on our accounts. I’ve come out of those meetings feeling positive because they show the variety of initiatives and opportunities that are available here. I gave myself ambitious targets in my first week. Two months later and that ambition has grown even larger. It is not every day that a company gives such a positive impression to a new starter – I put that down to the encouragement from my team and the working environment in the office…oh, and the awesome games room no doubt helps too!
