Learning on the job: work experience at Octopus Group

By Jodie.Blair on 16th August 2017

Will Richmond talks about the week he spent at Octopus Group on work experience.

My expectations

The prospect of diving into a real functioning workplace with full working hours, deadlines and responsibilities did indeed seem daunting to say the least. As prepared as I was, the actual work that I would be doing was somewhat a mystery to me until the moment I was assigned it. I suppose I expected small, reasonably uninteresting and unimportant tasks that at the most would allow me to gain an understanding of the routine and atmosphere of a workplace, most certainly I did not expect to be involved as an active member of a team providing a helping hand with many important subjects.

My Week

Over the course of my week at Octopus Group, I was positioned as a member of the brand engagement team and was lucky enough to work with some great people who guided me through my assignments and set me work that at many points pushed my abilities, yet was interesting, new to me and I was able to enjoy. I was most surprised by the vibrancy of the office with its yellow walls, red chairs and use of light and glass that conflicted my previous visualisation of an office. Not to mention the ‘interesting’ selection of music and cheerful spirits that generated a great atmosphere even whilst completing some of the few more mundane tasks I was set.

What have I learnt?

I honestly feel like I have learnt a lot from my time here, the range of activities I was completing was well varied and took me from research, to drafting social media posts, to cross referencing leads as well as a whole host of other tasks. I have become more comfortable with PC work and using Excel and PowerPoint as well as managing social media ads. Another important learning from my experience is how to work with others as part of a team and the importance of this skill in achieving goals.

Overall the experience was very much a good one that smashed my expectations and I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to carry out my work experience with Octopus Group that has provided me with an invaluable insight into the working world.
