PR Account Director

The PR Account Director is responsible for the effectiveness and success of their client campaigns. They are the glue between the disciplines, pulling together the right resources with a focus on great delivery, working closely from a commercial perspective with Client Directors to maximise account retention and upsell through strong strategic consultancy, good working knowledge of the full marketing mix and an astute eye for a commercial opportunity.

Experience of working with PR and an understanding of wider marketing communications techniques is required, as is a firm understanding of the importance of storytelling with brands. This role includes the provision of strategic insight to client accounts. A curious mind, strong analytical skills, problem solving capabilities and a passion for the B2B technology industry are all vital. Outstanding commercial and client management skills, the ability to remain calm and level-headed, including in a crisis is key.

Key responsibilities:

Technical delivery:

  • Alongside the Client Directors, be responsible for creating and maintaining integrated marketing plans including project timing plans, working with input from specialist departments when needed
  • Provide and contribute strategic direction, insight, guidance and creativity to drive accounts, using initiative to achieve excellent delivery for the client
  • Develop and maintain excellent relationships with key media, influencers, third parties and colleagues to provide appropriate skills and input to programmes and activities
  • Implement and monitor communications strategies and proposals
  • Be responsible for the management of briefing all client work into the relevant departments, drawing on support from the relevant teams and specialisms to ensure the quality of all work that is delivered to the client is of the highest standard
  • Be the hub of communication for the client – be a key point of contact for clients, advising them directly and demonstrating sound judgement
  • Identify any client issues and make recommendations to Client Directors for solutions in a timely manner
  • Ensure innovation is a common thread in delivery of all client projects
  • Drive client satisfaction across all touch points to ensure a consistent and positive experience with Octopus Group


  • Take ownership of the budgets of accounts, in conjunction with Client Directors, and be responsible for maintaining an accurate view of all revenue
  • Demonstrate accurate financial management skills e.g. accurate forecasting, avoiding over-service, effective planning, escalation of workload issues and negotiation with clients

Sales and Marketing:

  • Work with Client Directors to identify opportunities to promote Octopus Group’s integrated services where appropriate
  • Influence Octopus Group’s proposition and service offering based on client feedback, market context and insight
  • Work with Client Directors to develop existing accounts by identifying and securing upsell opportunities, and managing and negotiating client renewals
  • Take the lead and contribute to pitches and new business projects

People Management:

  • Take on line management responsibility including leadership, guidance, mentoring and direction to junior team and direct reports
  • Plan resourcing needs and assemble account teams for clients based on client requirements and workloads

Experience required:

  • At least 5 years B2B tech PR experience gained in an agency environment
  • Must have an interest in digital marketing concepts such as SEO, blogging, and social media, lead nurturing, email marketing etc…
  • Excellent drafting and reviewing skills – whether in preparing communication strategies, press releases, key message sheets, proposal documents or client brochures
  • Excellent client handling and good management skills, providing a mentoring role to other staff and building close relationships with clients
  • Top notch media skills and contacts – with specific experience of pro-active media work.
  • Proven experience in leading new business pitches and proposals
  • Strong people management experience – able to support and manage a matrix team structure
